The Legitimation of International Organizations: Introducing a New Dataset

Abstract This article introduces a new dataset on how international organizations (IOs) justify their authority. For long time, IOs were believed to derive legitimacy from member-state consent and technocratic problem-solving capacities. Over recent decades, the growing politicization of IOs, political polarization within Western democracies, power shifts in system have spurred IOs’ efforts right rule, using variety legitimation practices. While research theory practice IO has grown considerably over past decade, much this work builds case studies prominent global regional IOs. As result, we lack data suitable for systematic comparative analyses across world regions.
